CMC Statement on Blood Alcohol Limit

The Council of Medical Colleges of New Zealand strongly supports reducing the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) maximum limit from the current 0.08 g/100mL to 0.05 g/100mL (or lower) for all drivers over the age of 20 years. This statement is based on a large body of evidence that this will reduce alcohol related road traffic crashes and fatalities and align New Zealand’s policy with Australia and many European nations.

The issue of drink driving and the BAC limit was raised by a Member College, discussed at the CMC board meeting in August and subsequently developed into the evidence-based position statement above.
