The purpose of this literature and environmental scan is to identify cultural safety education and training initiatives available in the health sector in Aotearoa and internationally and assess what can be learnt regarding ‘what works’ to support doctors to practice in a culturally safe way.
This document presents a plan for cultural safety training that medical colleges can employ in the development of their own cultural safety training programmes for college registrar training and in continuing professional development (CPD) with college fellows.
The CMC in partnership with Te ORA commissioned this report to look at actions medical colleges are taking to support health equity, and to seek feedback on how Māori fellows and trainees experience vocational medical training. The report provides a knowledge base to support the evolution of vocational medical training towards cultural safety.
This report recommends a number of changes to make the Choosing Wisely campaign more effective for Māori. The research was undertaken by Anna Adcock, and commissioned by Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa (Te ORA) in partnership with Choosing Wisely which is a campaign facilitated in NZ by the Council of Medical Colleges.
The research was to develop an in-depth understanding of Māori health consumers and health providers/practitioners’ perspectives on shared decision-making, and make recommendations for a more equity focused Choosing Wisely campaign.

This Guide is a framework for use when developing or reviewing programmes set up to demonstrate the competence and performance of medical specialists. The Best Practice Guide was produced as a joint project between the Council of Medical Colleges (CMC) and Member Colleges, the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), the Ministry of Health (MoH) and District Health Board (DHB) Chief Medical Officers.
